2nd Annual Rooted in Art Event

September 19, 2021 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

The City of Charlottetown will host the 2nd annual Rooted in Art event on Sunday, September 19, from 2-4 p.m. in King’s Square to celebrate the diversity of local talent in PEI and pay tribute to the importance and beauty of the city’s urban forest.

The Rooted in Art initiative began in 2020 as a self-guided tour – a collaborated effort between the City’s Environment and Sustainability Department and local artists. This year, the Rooted in Art will take place from September 11 – 25 and include a one-day, in-person event to give residents and visitors the opportunity to mingle with the artists and City staff that work on the urban forest and environmental projects in Charlottetown.

Tree-inspired artwork will be on display in City trees along a 1.7-kilometre self-guided route, which features a series of green ash trees in Joe Ghiz Park, a linden tree and a horsechestnut tree on Fitzroy Street, an American elm and other tree species in King’s, and a sugar maple at the corner of Kent and Cumberland Streets.

In addition to this self-guided tour, a Rooted in Art event – Music and Mocktails in the Park – will be held on Sunday, September 19, from 2-4 p.m. in King’s Square. There will be entertainment by Adam MacGregor and the Foes and light refreshments, along with the City’s forestry staff and artists involved in the project. Due to public health guidance for COVID-19, pre-registration for this free event is encouraged.

Charlottetown’s urban forest was the inspiration for the Rooted in Art initiative. Trees are an extremely valuable part of the city and provide many essential services and benefits, including cooling and cleaning the air, blocking wind, buffering noise, and assisting with stormwater management. One tree, for example, can sequester more than 1,100 pounds of carbon, save 330 kilowatt-hours of energy, and divert more than 30,000 litres of stormwater every year.
